Sergio and his team are coming to the end of a four day assessment of the flooded Tabasco region, and have formed a vivid picture of the disaster’s impact on animals. As the waters recede slightly the horrifying animal toll is becoming apparent.
After visiting many shelters provided by the Mexican authorities it has emerged that only humans were evacuated from flooded areas – initial findings suggest over half a million backyard animals and family pets have drowned. By the time Sergio and the team were able to access these areas they found very few animals alive to give feed and emergency treatment to, despite being prepared to start helping affected animals immediately.
The evacuation shelters are now slowly being packed up, with many people expected to return home soon. Sergio is hoping that tomorrow, in the final day of the assessment, they might be able to find some sense of hope in helping any animals left behind.
