We are closely monitoring the oil spill that is currently threatening the southern coast of the United States of America, especially given the potential threat to wildlife in the area.
Fortunately, the US has a well organised framework to respond to oil spills and as such we currently do not perceive the need to get involved. As far as the animal needs around this disaster are concerned, the International Bird Rescue Research Centre (IBRC) is currently leading the response with its professionals ready to respond. WSPA has already offered our assistance to national and state SPCA groups in the area, who have confirmed that our help would not be required at this point.
Nonetheless, the WSPA disaster management team in Latin America have a Veterinary Emergency Response Unit (based in Costa Rica) on standby and are ready to deploy rapidly, should we receive any requests for our help. We shall continue to monitor the situation closely and of course, keep you updated as things progress.
