On 2 January, a strong earthquake struck the same area of Chile devastated last year by an even more powerful quake, though thankfully the damage caused to humans and animals appears to be minimal.
The quake, measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale, comes less than one year after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit the Concepcion area, creating a need for emergency assistance by WSPA and local member societies.
Since the quake struck on Sunday near the city of Temuco, we have been monitoring the situation to respond to any possible need for rescue or assistance of local animals. Fortunately, to date, it appears that damage has been limited, despite the magnitude of the quake, and that it will not be necessary to deploy a team to the area.
WSPA has also contacted our local member society, CAPAC, which has reported no significant need at present, though we will continue to monitor events on the ground very closely for any change in the gravity of the situation.
