A CAT 5 typhoon, known locally as Yolanda, has been picking up strength since Sunday and is moving at great speed towards the Eastern Visayas in the Philippines; an area which is home to 4.1 million people. It is expected to hit the islands by tomorrow morning.
Mass evacuations are underway for residents in low-lying, mountainous and coastal areas in anticipation of possible flash floods and landslides, as a result of the storm.
WSPA staff are monitoring the situation and response teams are on standby to deploy to the affected area. Public service announcements have been issued to local radio stations and news outlets to give advice to pet owners at risk from the storm.
